Kentsel morfolojinin -kent formu araştırmaları- geçmişi geç dönem on dokuzuncu yüzyıla da- yanmaktadır. İlk dönem yayınlar betimsel ve ayrıntıdan yoksundu. Yirminci yüzyılın ortalarında tarihsel-coğrafya katmanı eklendi ve mimarlıktan tipo-morfolojik bir yaklaşıma evrildi. Yir- minci yüzyılın sonlarında ise yalnızca fiziksel form değil, aracı/aktör ve eylemliği de kapsayan süreçler irdelemeye başlandı. Son olarak mekan dizim (Space Syntax), coğrafi bilgi sistemleri (G!S) ve benzetim (simülasyon) teknolojik yaklaşımlar olarak eklendi. Tüm bu yaklaşımların güçlü ve zayıf yönleri bulunmakta. Bu yazı, yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde Urban Morphology dergisi- nin sayfalarından verilen örneklerle kentsel morfolojinin gelişimini gözden geçirmektedir. Çok- lu müellifiik, çokdisiplinlilik ve disiplinelerarasılık yaklaşımlarına yönelim; yaklaşımlar ara- sında karşılaştırma; ve genel daha zengin ve karmaşık kentsel morfolojiye yönelik genel hare- ket konularına özel önem verilmektedir. Bununla birlikte, boşluklar ve fırsatlar bulunmaktadır ve bu yazı önümüzdeki on yılda kentsel morfolojinin potansiyel gelişimlerini tanımlamaktadır
